Peer Advising Center

The Peer Advising Center, located in Psy 206, is an academic advising service for psychology students as well as an educational experience for Peer Advisors. Peer Advisors are undergraduate psychology majors who serve for one year to assist and advise psychology students. The Peer Advising office is a resource for all psychology students including majors, minors, pre-majors, graduate students, psychology alumni and all others interested in psychology at "The Beach." We invite you to come in and take advantage of these resources at any time. Remember, no appointments are necessary, so stop in any time! Email us with any of your questions at: psyugadv@csulb.edu

Peer Advising Resources

The Psychology Department's Academic Peer Advising office has a wealth of materials available to both undergraduate and graduate psychology major and pre-major students. A popular area is our Graduate Resource Room, which contains books and binders on the graduate school application process, various careers and specialties in psychology and related fields, as well as information on various psychology graduate programs throughout the country.

How to be a Peer Advisor

A select group of Psychology majors will be trained as academic peer advisors to greet and orient new majors and minors and to provide general information to Psychology students about department requirements, student organizations, careers, graduate study and other psychology opportunities.
Prerequisites:

Peer Advisors must be psychology majors, but may apply while still pre-majors.

At the time of application, nine upper-division psychology units must be completed or underway.

Priority will be given to applicants who have completed PSY 220, 210, and 301.

All applicants must have completed both 220 and 210 by the end of the semester in which they apply and have completed or be enrolled in PSY 301 for the current or upcoming semester.

Overall GPA of at least 2.75; Psychology GPA of at least 3.0.

Two letters of recommendation attesting to the reliability and responsibility of the applicant.

At least one of the letters should be from a CSULB Psychology faculty member.

Ease in interacting with peers.

Availability one week prior to the beginning of the upcoming semester.

One year commitment

Format: Peer advisors must attend class for 11/2 hours a week on Wednesdays (12:30 to 1:50) and be available an additional five hours each week for advising (hours to be arranged). In addition each peer advisor will undertake an educational project that averages two to three hours a week. Benefits:

Learn about course requirements, graduate school and careers in the field of psychology. 3) Earn six units of upper division credit. One semester of PSY 406A/B satisfies three units of Psychology Category 5 (400-level course) and the second semester satisfies three units of Psychology Category 6 (any 300 or 400 Psychology course). 4) Gain experience important to employers and graduate schools.

Come to the Peer Advising Office (PSY 206) and pick up an application! The deadline for applications will be posted around the Psych building, so keep an eye out. Submit your completed application to Ms. Jenning's mailbox in the main office (PSY 100) by the deadline-the earlier the better. Sign up for an interview at Ms. Jenning's office at PSY 108. Bring two letters of recommendation (in sealed envelopes with signatures across the flaps) and a picture to the interview. The format for the letters of recommendation will be provided along with the applications. Students will be interviewed and those selected will be informed prior to the start of MyCSULB registration for the following semester.
